Sped, is a slang term used in schools to describe a person who is in a Special Education program. Sped programs help children with learning disabilities. The term is usually, but not always, used as an insult, particularly in instances where the receiver of the insult has said or done something which may be interpreted as particularly unintelligent. It is believed to have been coined by two school boys in Pennsylvania. It comes from the first two letters of each word (SPecial EDucation). See also short bus.
