  • Comment: My main comment on this is the neutrality of the lead paragraph. Perhaps it could be described as "a privacy-focused search engine that summarizes search results by website categories rather than a single list of links" or something else along those lines, but I don't think the company's own statement of their goal is the best thing to start off with. You.com is a privacy-focused search engine that summarizes web results using website categories, contrary to a traditional search engine which shows a list of links.[1][2] The search engine was founded by former Salesforce employees and opened its public beta in November 9th, 2021.[3] In an interview, Richard Socher has stated they wanted a search engine with a balance of privacy and personalization.[4]

History

The website was founded in 2020 by two former Salesforce employees, Bryan McCann and Richard Socher. Following the search engine's announcement of opening the public beta in 2021, it received $20 million dollars in funding from Marc Benioff, the Salesforce founder.[5]

On March 2022, the company launched YouWrite, a GPT-3 text generator for writing e-mails and other documents.[6][7]

Search results

The search engine shows search results sorted by specific websites, for example, Reddit. These categories can be sorted by the user.[2] For web results, it uses Microsoft Bing's results.[8]

There is also a private mode, which sends less data to You.com than a regular search.[9]

Reception

You has received generally positive reviews, with the main criticism being the way it organizes information, which has been described as overwhelming by The Verge.[3]
