Fallen One is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics Universe. He was a Herald of Galactus whose tenure predates that of the Silver Surfer — long thought to have been the first herald. He now serves as the "Herald" of Thanos.
Character Background
Long before the Silver Surfer, Galactus first herald was the Fallen One; recruited/created under unknown circumstances, his true name was forgotten over the millennia. Eventually, the Fallen One was cast out by Galactus, possibly for his naturally corrupt, power hungry, and violent nature. The Fallen One was imprisoned many times over many centuries, upon each escape he immediately targeted Galactus, who always defeated him. Eventually, the Fallen One was brought down by Star-Lord. However, the energies required caused massive collateral damage, leaving 350,000 dead. The Fallen One was captured and kept in a creche in the Kyln's Omega Core, a massive intergalactic maximum security prison.
When Thanos of Titan battled the Maker in the Kyln, power was shut down to many portions of the massive intergalactic prison. Without power flowing into the prison, the Fallen One escaped the Kyln and again sought vengeance on Galactus. As the Fallen One confronted Galactus, Thanos mentally tried to reason with the Fallen One, reminding him of Galactus special purpose in the universe. The Fallen One justified himself saying that Galactus knew its true nature when he made the Fallen One what he is, yet still he cast him out. Galactus decided to simultaneously alleviate his own problems and spite Thanos, teleporting Fallen One to Thanos' ship. Fallen One warned Thanos to keep out of his business with Galactus or perish, claiming he would find Galactus regardless of the circumstances. Thanos refused to back down, so the Fallen One unleashed a devastating attack. The Fallen One's powerful energy attack devastated Thanos' giant ship, sending it plummeting to the surface of the planet below. Surviving unscathed, Thanos and his new ally Skreet overpowered the Fallen One sending him to the core of a gas giant, where Fallen one then ignited it. Thanos mentally enslaved Fallen One's unconscious form, so when he awoke he would serve as Thanos own herald, as well as provide him with information as to its source of unlimited energy.
When the Annihilation Wave struck and the Kyln was destroyed, Thanos dispatched the Fallen One to check the Beyonder's status. The Fallen One was captured and drained of energy by Tenebrous and Aegis, two ancient enemies of Galactus who hoped to use him to find their opponent.
Powers and Abilities
Fallen One possesses cosmic powers diverse from those of a herald of Galactus; unlike Galactus later heralds Fallen One's inexhaustible power source is black matter, the "binding halo by which galaxies are made solvent". The Fallen One manipulates this infinite source of cosmic energy for application such as incalculable strength and durability augmentation. He can navigate space, hyperspace and dimensional barriers, and can fly at near-limitless speeds, entering hyperspace when he exceeds light speed.
The Fallen One does not require food, drink, air or sleep, sustained entirely by converting matter into energy. He is immune to temperature extremes and most radiation, and can survive in vacuum environments such as outer space and hyperspace. He can analyze and manipulate matter and energy, and restructure or animate matter at will, even transmuting elements. He can heal living beings (though he cannot raise the dead), and like Galactus later Heralds is capable of revitalizing or evolving organic life on a planet wide scale. He can alter the size of himself or of other matter, cast illusions, fire energy blasts, form and manipulate energy constructs, manipulate gravity, absorb and discharge most forms of energy, and phase through solid matter. His senses enable him to detect objects and energies light years away, and to perceive matter and energy in subatomic detail; he can even see through time, and with concentration can achieve limited perception of past and future events in his general vicinity. Also, like a herald of Galactus, The Fallen One has limited telepathic abilities.
