Preventive and social medicine is a branch of medicine dealing with providing health services in areas of prevention,promotion and treatment of rehabilitative diseases. Studies in Preventive and social medicine are helpful in providing Guided care, medicine in environmental health, offering scholarly services, policy formulation, consulting, research in International work. While other fields of medicines deals with individual health,preventive medicines deals with community health.

History and Objective

Preventive and Social medicine primarily deals with providing a complete health services in the field of rehabilitation,curative,preventive and promotion in the field of health sector[1][2][3]. Preventive and Social medicine has been designed at community level unlike other fields of medicines which deals at individual level[4]. This branch of medicine deals with improving the public health.

Responsibilities

Practice of Preventive and social medicine involves managing and assessing of surroundings[5]. Their main responsibilities include offering specialize services for people health and defined populations[6], helping in preventing disease through protection and maintainence of health[7] helping in preventing disability and premature death. and involving management and assessment of health surrounding environmental or occupational factors[8]. The field of preventive medicine covers a wide range of medical practice[1][9][10]

Education

A person can pursue education in Preventive and Social Medicine if after completion of 12th standard in science stream and had completed MBBS. They should have completed MD or a diploma course with specialisation in this field. It is also recommended to have undergone training for practical exposure with community organisation.[1]

There are various universities offering degress in this field.
