It tells the story of a former leader in the General Union of Students in Tunisia called Abdel Nasser Al-Teliani, a law student from the capital, Tunis, who is distinguished by an Italian handsome and has a love relationship with his colleague Zina, with whom he differs socially, while they are united by the goal of revolutionizing society and Zina, a philosophy student coming from a Berber village in the northwest The rebellious one is influenced by Bourguiba’s thought, which granted women rights that are almost better than men’s. The novel narrates the events of an important stage in Tunisia’s history that the country passed through in the last years of Bourguiba’s rule and its aftermath, and deals with the dreams of a generation that was contested by the ambitions and setbacks of the Islamists and leftists’ struggle and a collapsing political system.[2] [3]

The writer stated that the idea of the novel came to him from the events of the Arab Spring revolutions: “After two years of the revolution in Tunisia and the stage close to Tunisia’s history, it is similar to its fears, vicissitudes, and conflicts, as was the transition period from the era of leader Bourguiba to the era of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali following the 1987 coup.”[4] With its intertwined plots and its growing characters that negotiate its reality with a gelatinous discipline that does not deny its past and does not adhere to it completely. The novel contains many attractive and surprising stations in its vibrations and its depiction of an important stage in the history of Tunisia in the twentieth century [4] [5]

quotes

In spite of everything, there is something that connects them more than a marriage caused by circumstances and chance. When Italian's lips begin to suck the swamp of that thoughtful reed, and his hands feel soft to the touch, it becomes a tender green branch that twists as the wind of desire touches it.

This satanic plant is amazing and does not settle on one body. Sometimes he sees a dry branch or a dry trunk. At other times, it is a fragrant oud, shining and the wind renews the senses that have become dull.

Perhaps that was some of what made their paths separate on most days, but they meet at a moment whose secret they do not know.

Zina admitted that Al-Taliani could see him in his moments of anger as the inferno of "Dante" or the fall of "Orpheus",

But in his moments of lust, she sees him as an Indian lover, ready to die in love. It was a ticking lust that did not know when it would explode and did not leave a place in the body where the delicious burns or deadly shrapnel could not reach [6].
