KaVontae Turpin (born August 2, 1996) is a wide receiver for the second iteration of the New Jersey Generals in the USFL. He played college football at TCU. On June 22, 2022, Turpin was awarded MVP for the USFL.[1]

Early life

Pounds went to Neville High School in his home town Monroe, Louisiana. There he totaled 1,928 all-purpose yards, including 904 rushing and 724 receiving, and 29 touchdowns. He left his high school as a three-star recruit and no. 12 prospect from all of Louisiana.[2]

College career

On January 25, 2015, Turpin committed to TCU over another scholarship offer from Texas Tech.[3] In his first season, he already started in five of 13 games and was named freshman All-American by the FWAA as well as honorable mention All-Big 12 selection as a return specialist. He finished his college career in 2017 as a first-team All-Big 12 kick and punt returner, a first-team AP All-Big 12 (all-purpose) and honorable mention All-Big 12 as a wide receiver.[2]

Professional career

Panthers Wrocław

For the 2021 season, the Panthers Wrocław signed him mid-season as replacement for injured running back Mark Herndon, after he played shortly in the Fan Controlled Football league and The Spring League.[4] There he won 3 out of 4 regular season games with an important win over later play-off opponent Hamburg Sea Devils. In the semi-final on the road Turpin and the Panthers lost in a close game with 27 to 30. On November 2, 2021, the franchise re-signed him but he instead opted to be eligible for the draft of the newly founded USFL.[5]

New Jersey Generals

Turpin was drafted by the New Jersey Generals in the 13th round with the 103rd pick.[6]

Personal life

In 2019 Turpin plead guilty in a family violence case against his former girlfriend which occurred in October 2018. He was cut from the TCU football program by Gary Patterson shortly after he was informed of this and another, earlier battery charge against him.[7]
