This is primarily for the benefit of new users, though more seasoned contributors may find it helpful as an aid to repetitive editing.

Please observe the NGAELIC guideline, which for players of Gaelic games, is inter-county and senior.

Below is an older version which Macca7174 put together in 2007.

Firstly, go to the edit page of this section, and copy and paste everything below, and replace the italicised text with info on the player. If there are sections which you can't comment on (personal life usually), keep the heading hidden <!-- put it inside these -->. Make sure to check previews, so that you can hide things, or not. For information on how to use the infobox, go Template_talk:Infobox_GAA_player#Update --Macca7174 16:33, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Intro - this is where you give a quick summing up of the player. If someone had heard their name (while reading an article for example) and want to quickly find out who they were, this section should sufficiently tell people quickly what they need to know.

It should include their county with a link to their county suchs as Dublin GAA, sport, any achievements such as all stars, all-ireland/provincial wins, any applicable captaincies, preferred position etc.

It's also useful to mention what their particular style of play is - so for Ciaran Whelan mention his superior high-fielding abilities.

==Personal life==

This section is about the player's family life, career, etc. Sometimes this information can be difficult to come by, but it does give the overall article more personality. A good example of what could go in here would be Graham Geraghty's moves into politics.

==Playing career==

The primary focus in this section is going to be the player's senior inter-county achievements, but it can be proceeded by their under-age, club and school/college achievements. Draw a line at minor intercounty, senior club achievements and MacRory/Hogan school level though - any more detail and it goes into granny's-scrapbook territory.

If a player is particularly successful, be selective, don't go into paragraphs about all their achievements, just the more notable ones, such as all-ireland wins, player of the year wins etc.

After that, you would put some succession boxes - although again, be selective. Useful ones are ones for the All-Ireland captains, or players of the year. This is the markup for it - again, replace the italicisation as necessary. And put the preceeding and succeeding players in links [[inside these]]

Preceded by
The player who won the previous year
What the player won
The year the player won
Succeeded by
The player who won the year after
Then some team templates could go here. These may be hard to find, put a note on this projects talk page if you don't think one exists. There is a Wikipedia-wide discussion about the validity of some team templates (mostly for soccer teams - see Thierry Henry) so I wouldn't advise going ahead and make your own in case it is decided that they are superfluous and you'll have wasted your time. That can be exceedingly frustrating. - an example is

Finally categorise the article. Use this DEFAULTSORT:''Player's surname, Player's forename but remove the first colon (:) to activate it - then use appropiate categories.

Category:''year won'' All Star (''football/hurling'') Category:''County'' ''Gaelic footballer/hurler'' Category:''year of birth/death (if known/applicable)'' births Category:People from County ''county''

Whenever you have done as much of this as you can, add one of the stub templates (if necessary) and have saved the page, go to the articles talk page and put {{GaelicGamesProject}} so we can keep tabs on any new articles and add to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Gaelic_Games#New_Articles

Well done.
