Devyani Rana was the girlfriend of Crown Prince Dipendra of Nepal. She is the daughter of Pashupati Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, the president of one of the democratic political parties of Nepal- The Rastriya Prajatantra Party(RPP). The refusal of his parents to consent to his marriage with Devyani was the reported cause of the murder of members of the royal family in Nepal. The Prince reportedly shot and murdered ten members of his family before being mortally wounded himself (either by his own hand or by the Palace Guard). He was proclaimed King of Nepal whilst in a coma. He died two days later.

Rana belonged to mighty Rana family, that ruled Nepal until 1951. Her mother hailed from an influential Indian royal family (the Scindias , such as Madhavrao Scindia). Rana fled to India immediately after the royal massacre to escape media attention.

According to an article published on April 14 2006 in the Calcutta Telegraph, Devyani Rana is engaged to Ashwarya Singh "who manages his family’s private forests." He is "the grandson of Human Resources and Development minister Arjun Singh. His mother Bina is Arjun’s daughter and father Bhuwaneshwari Prasad Singh is a Thakur from Singhrauli in western Uttar Pradesh."
