Home Videos: Why You Should Edit Your Home Videos To DVD

The Advantage of DVD over Tape or 8mm Film

Video tapes deteriorate in as little as 5 years, while DVDs can last more than 100 years. Each time you view a video tape, the magnetic patterns on the tape gradually weaken and a bit of the outer coating rubs off. Even if your video sits on your shelf for years, the magnetic pattern and video quality still deteriorates. And each time you play your tape from a VCR or 8mm video camera, you run the risk of the device malfunctioning and destroying your precious tape. 8mm film also degrades over time (becoming brittle) and projectors occasionally cut or tear your precious film.
An especially hardy DVD is the TDK Armor Plated DVD which is extremely scratch resistant (standard store bought DVDs can be scratched pretty easily).

The Advantage of Editing Your Video To DVD

Many people have a dozen or more home video tapes that they have never watched. Why don't they watch them? Because no one wants to watch 2 hours of raw footage of a birthday party to enjoy the few minutes of interesting moments! And it is such a hassle to plug the video camera into the TV set.
An edited video, containing just the highlights of several video tapes would be much more enjoyable to watch. Plus you can make multiple copies of the edited movie and give them to grandparents, siblings, friends, etc. Some video editing ideas include

Personal Biography Movie (videos, photos, on-camera interviews, and voice-over narration) School Graduation Gift (trace a child's progress through his school years) Wedding Anniversary Gift (combine videos, photos, music to commemorate a marriage) Wedding Gift (combine videos, photos, music to play at the wedding rehearsal) Sports Teams (track a team's season as a DVD movie) Christmas Gift (combine old photos and videos of the kids for their grandparents) Funeral Tribute Memorials (Photos and videos can tell their story at the funeral)

If you don't have the time, equipment, or expertise to create these DVD movies, there are many companies out there that will. Some good companies are:
