Shyam Sharma is a leading print artist[1] from India who has enriched society and art by a wide range of his creative works for the last six decades.[2] He has authored several books and articles on art and literature. He is also a poet.[3] He has received a number of prestigious national and international awards including Padmashri by the Government of India.[4]

Childhood & Education

Shyam Sharma's full name is Shyam Sunder Sharma.[5] He was born on 8 February 1941 in Mathura Uttar Pradesh.[6] He was exposed to printmaking early in his life by a printing press run by his father in Baraily. He also got an opportunity to learn the art of printmaking from his maternal grandfather.[7] Later he joined Lucknow University to receive higher education in Fine Arts.

When asked once, how he got hooked to printmaking, Shyam Sharma had said, “While at my father’s printing press, the prints were developed from machines, at the College of Arts and Crafts in Lucknow I learnt how to develop handmade prints and got hooked on it."[8]

Achievements

He started his career in 1966 as a lecturer at College of Arts & Crafts Patna where he rose to become Head of the Department of Printmaking and later the Principal.[9]

Continuing his journey as a teacher in Patna Shyam Sharma has kept on setting newer milestones in the art of printmaking. And it's no surprise that he is recognised today as a unique Printmaker in India and abroad.[10]

His oeuvre has been displayed in more than hundred solo and group exhibitions all over the world. Some of the countries where he has visited as an artist or where he has participated in exhibitions are Finland, Nepal, Yugoslavia, USA, Japan, Netherlands, Oman, Egypt and Turkey. He has also been a member of the General Council of Lalit Kala Academy and the Chairman of the Advisory Board of National Modern Art Gallery Delhi.[11]

Publications

Besides being a Printmaker Shyam Sharma has also been a writer, art critic and a poet. More than a dozen books authored by him have been published. The prominent among them are Safed Sanp (a poetry collection), Syah, Dekha Dekhi Baat (plays), Gandhi Aur Suktiyan, Kashth Chhapa Kala, Chitrakala aur Bihar, Patna Qualam (Philosophy, Art history).[12]

Awards

Constant efforts and commitment are the key to the success of Shyam Sharma's creative world of printmaking. He has received several national and international awards.[13][14] National Award by Lalit Kala Academy Delhi, Padmashree[15] by the Government of India and International Print Biennial in Netherlands are just to name a few.[16]
