Sebastian Behmann (born 7 October 1969, in Hannover, Germany) is a German architect and co-founder of Studio Other Spaces (SOS), a studio for architecture and art that Behmann and artist Olafur Eliasson founded together[1]. The studio is known for its experiments at the intersection of architecture and art[2]. This partnership aims at offering a platform for both areas to stimulate each other, giving them the opportunity to intersect and enrich each other in a more systematic way[3]. Behmann heads the department of design at Studio Olafur Eliasson (SOE).

Education and career

Behmann was responsible architect for the following SOS projects:

  • Common Sky (2019–2023)[4], a contribution to the reinvention of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (formerly known as Albright-Knox Art Gallery) in Buffalo;
  • Vertical Panorama Pavilion (2020–2022), a wine-tasting pavilion for Donum Estate in Sonoma, California[5];
  • The Seeing City (2015–2022), a permanent work of art for the 15th and 16th floor of the Morland Mixité Capitale building in Paris, France[6];
  • Lyst Restaurant[7] (2019) in Vejle's Fjordenhus in Denmark[8];
  • Meles Zenawi Memorial Park[9] (2013–ongoing), a campus including five buildings, several pavilions, and a park in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Behmann studied architecture at TU Dresden.

Research and sustainability

Under Behmann’s guidance, SOS has created a lab to study more ecological and sustainable materials[3]. He also heads the SOE sustainability team and oversees the implementation of the studio’s strategy to become carbon-neutral within the next decade[10].
