Neil Peter Hammerton Hudson[1] FRCVS is a British politician, academic and veterinary surgeon who has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Penrith and The Border since 2019. He lives in Edinburgh with his wife Nicola[2]. A member of the Conservative Party, he has served on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee since 2020.

Academic career

Hudson studied at Queens' College, Cambridge, qualifying from the veterinary school in 1994. Hudson then completed an internship at the University of Sydney, gaining a diploma in 1995, and later a PhD in Equine Gastroenterology at the University of Edinburgh.[3]

Hudson is a senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.[3][4]

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.[3]

Political career

At the 2005 general election, Hudson contested the Newcastle upon Tyne North UK parliamentary constituency, losing to the incumbent Labour MP Doug Henderson.[5] Hudson also contested the Edinburgh South UK parliamentary constituency in the 2010 general election, losing to the Labour candidate Ian Murray.[6]

Hudson was elected the MP for Penrith and The Border at the 2019 general election, winning a majority of 18,519 votes.[7][8]

Since March 2020, Hudson has been a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee.[9]

Personal life

Neil Hudson was born to Professor Christopher Neville Hudson and his wife Caryl Shaw as one of three children. He has a brother Grahame Hudson, a retired Design Management academic[10] and former Liberal Democrat candidate,[11] and a sister Jayne Gould, a physiotherapist.[12][13][14] He now lives in Edinburgh with his wife Nicola (née Chedgey)[15] and rents a constituency home in the Carlisle City area. [16]

Hudson has performed in the Cambridge Footlights and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.[12][17]

Hudson was in charge of auditions for the Cambridge Footlights at university and did not think much of the comic talent of one of his fellow students, so didn’t give him a part. The unfortunate student was Sacha Baron Cohen — now one of the most successful comics in the world.[11]
