Fresh Radio is an independent local radio station broadcasting to the Yorkshire Dales in northern England on three medium wave (AM) frequencies and currently two FM frequencies (17 Feb 2007). It can also be heard online via the Fresh Radio website.

Transmission

Two of the three AM frequencies will be switched off by April 2007 and replaced by FM transmitters in Skipton, Ilkley, Pateley Bridge, Settle and Grassington. The FM transmitter for Richmond commenced broadcasts on February 11 2007 on 102.6FM.

The Ilkley transmitter has also since began broadcasting on 107.1FM as of February 18 2007

The station's main studio base is in Skipton but daily programmes are also broadcast from studios located in Richmond, North Yorkshire.

Content

Content features a variety of music, featuring contemporary recording artists from the sixties to the present day, together with news (local and national), weather, travel, quizzes and local information.

History

Fresh Radio was launched 4 May 1997 as Yorkshire Dales Radio with the strapline "May the fourth be with you". The station was re-launched in 1999 as Fresh AM, with a slight change of name two years later to Fresh Radio.

Staff as at 1 January 2007

  • Chairman is Chris (P.C.D.) Parkin, one of the founding members and a former director of Stray FM in Harrogate.[citation needed]
  • Managing director is Dave Parker, formerly with Ridings Radio and Stray FM.
  • Head of news and news editor is James Wilson, the only surviving member of the original on-air team; founding director of the station and one of the original presentation team at Stray FM.

Ownership

[citation needed]

Fresh Radio is locally owned and independent of the major groups, with majority shareholding held by the board of directors, most of whom live in or adjacent to the area covered by the station. Board members have publicly expressed strong views about local radio being locally owned and run, and have expressed a commitment to their shareholders and listeners to remain so.

Awards

Fresh Radio was named "Yorkshire and The North East Radio Station Of The Year" in 2004, and again in 2006, by the Radio Academy.
