The Talented Mr. Ripley is a 1999 American psychological thriller film directed by Anthony Minghella and based on the 1955 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. The film stars Matt Damon as the titular character, Tom Ripley, alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The story follows Ripley, a young man who is sent to Italy to retrieve a wealthy shipbuilder's son, only to become entangled in a web of deception and murder.

Plot

[edit]

Tom Ripley, a young underachiever living in 1950s New York City, is mistaken for a college friend of the wealthy shipbuilder Herbert Greenleaf's son, Dickie. Greenleaf offers Ripley $1,000 to travel to Italy and persuade his playboy son, Dickie, to return to the United States. Eager for the opportunity, Ripley accepts the job and travels to the small Italian village of Mongibello, where he meets Dickie and his girlfriend, Marge Sherwood. Ripley becomes infatuated with Dickie's extravagant lifestyle and begins to insinuate himself into Dickie's world. As Ripley and Dickie become closer, Marge becomes increasingly suspicious of Ripley's motives. Dickie begins to tire of Ripley and starts spending more time with his hedonistic friend, Freddie Miles. Desperate to maintain his connection with Dickie, Ripley murders him in a fit of rage and assumes his identity. Ripley successfully impersonates Dickie, taking over his life and forging his signature to access his trust fund. Marge becomes more determined to uncover the truth, while Ripley juggles multiple identities and relationships, including one with the wealthy socialite Meredith Logue. Freddie becomes suspicious and confronts Ripley, leading to a violent confrontation that ends with Ripley killing Freddie. As the authorities close in, Ripley is forced to confront the consequences of his actions and choose between his newfound life of luxury and his own sense of self.
