James C. Kulhanek, Jr. (April 23, 1908 – April 1, 1990) was a Cleveland-born commercial artist and designer.

Biography

Vaclav (James) Kulhanek Sr., the father of James C. Kulhanek Jr., was born within the Austro-Hungarian Empire on July 15, 1876. He was between 23 and 25 years of age when he immigrated to the United States in 1905 or 1906 from Kullpolany, Bohemia. Anna Kulhanek, née Veleba, the mother of Kulhanek Jr., was born in approximately 1883, and immigrated to the United States in 1906. Anna and Vaclav were married on June 8, 1907, and James C. Kulhanek, Jr. was born April 23, 1908.[1]

Work

Between 1935 and 1942, Kulhanek received commissions through New Deal Works Progress Administration sponsored art projects (such as the rendering of several prints of elks, great horned owls,[2] and reindeer, now in the collection of Case Western University).[3][4] He also painted panels to be installed in the hallways of Collinwood and Lincoln High Schools as well as the Federal Building.
