Elliott is University of Alberta Distinguished Professor, Faculty of Engineering - Chemical and Materials Engineering Dept[1] and holder of a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Thermodynamics.[2] She studies the physics of surfaces, such as liquid-vapor boundaries. Elliott has developed and applied theoretical thermodynamic models to understand how to preserve living tissue through cooling it without significant damage.

Janet Elliott is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, [3] Chemical Institute of Canada,[4] and Canadian Academy of Engineering.[5] In 2022, she was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.[6]
