ToruKubota[1] (久保田 徹, Kubota Toru;born February 23, 1996) is a Japanese filmmaker.

He was detained in military-controlled Myanmar on July 30, 2022.[2]

Career

Born in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture in 1996.[1]

He started his creative activities in 2014 when studying at the Department of Political Science at Keio University.[1][3]

Studied documentary at a graduate school in London from 2019, but dropped out the following year.

In March 2020, he returned to Japan due to the influence of the new coronavirus.

In an interview about his overseas activities, "I was creating works that approached so-called international issues."

"However, when I returned to Japan due to the corona crisis, I started to pay more attention to my sense of ownership."

he said. Then he is returning his base of activities to Japan.

He made "Tokyo Little Nero" in the midst of a change in his state of mind and the corona crisis.

Then, he was asked by Toshio Akagi's wife to photograph her husband's room, and he produced the documentary

"I Want to Know the Truth."[4]

On July 30, 2022, he was arrested by security authorities while covering

and filming a Myanmar coup protest demonstration in Yangon.

He is charged with sedition and violating immigration laws,

but the Japanese government has requested Myanmar's early release.[5][6]

However, on October 5, a military court sentenced Kubota to seven years in prison.[7]

On November 17th, he was released under a military amnesty and returned to Japan on the 18th.[8][9][10][11]

After returning to Japan, along with journalist Yuki Kitazumi, who had experience of being detained

by the Myanmar military like Kubota,

they started the project "Docu Athan" to support journalists in Myanmar.[12][13][14]

(Personal prizes)

He describes documentary production as "a sculptural process. "

He also describes himself as a documentary filmmaker rather than a journalist.[5]
