Article 21[1] movie talks about the necessity of upholding the basic rights of the underprivileged and the marginalised section within Indian society and how education could make a difference in the lives of those living on the streets.[2] [3] [4]

It simultaneously also deals with the question of universality of human rights and the social divide that makes education and opportunities for upward social mobility a distant dream for many. It portrays a relevant issue sensitively and with good artistic taste. This movie is meant to be an eye opener to the lives of people around us

Plot

Tamara (Lena) and her children Muthu (Nandan Rajesh) and Dalapathi (Leswin Ullas) (migrants from Tamil Nadu) make a living by collecting and selling scraps in the city of Kochi. They live in an abandoned bus near to a railway track in their own world filled with little joys and sorrows. They are deprived of their right to dream or achieve anything and are moving along with the flow of the world. One day, Dalapathi the younger kid accidentally finds a school bag and after checking out the books and going to school to return the bag, Dalapthi wishes to join a school and get an education. Tamara is unable to fulfill his wish as she does not know what needs to be done and does not have the means for the same. Dalapathi starts spending a lot of time hanging around the school and watching other students in school. The story takes a turn when auto driver Vishnu (Aju Varghese) and his teacher friend Victor (Romanch) help Dalapathi and his family overcome all obstacles (including the lack of any government-recognized identification documents) in enrolling him to school with the help of an Act of the Parliament of India which describes the importance of free and compulsory education for all children between the age of 6 to 14 years in India, under Article 21A of the Indian constitution. India is the biggest democracy in the world and is the second most populous country with millions of children living on its streets. They are unaware of their basic rights and more importantly the importance of education which could transform their lives for the better. India had passed a law in 2009, making education a fundamental right of every child and to impart free and compulsory education for children between the age of 6 to 14 years. This movie Article 21 aims to be the voice of the millions of such children and to show a slice of life of the neglected and how aspirations, a few good Samaritans and the law of the land can help turn around things for the better.
