Alain has been working as a head gardener of the national estate of Trianon and at the park of the Château de Versailles since 1982.[2] In 2009, he has been appointed as the head gardener of the national estate of Marly-le-Roi.[3] At the same time, he writes columns for radio (France Inter since 2003) and television (France 5 since 2014).[4] He has also written numerous books and articles on gardening, plants and versailles.

In April 2006, he was appointed as the national correspondent to the French Academy of Agriculture.
Gardener
In July 1976 he got a seasonal job at the Versailles estate as a cashier at the park entrance[2] where he fell in love with the place and the old trees.[8] Later in September of the same year, he became a trainee assistant gardener.[9]
