Five Break-Ups and a Romance is a Philippine romantic-drama film directed by Irene Emma Villamor. It stars Alden Richards and Julia Montes.[1]

The film dealt with the complexities of relationships in today's time and aimed for the elevation of the traditional Filipino romance genre to an even more sophisticated level.[2]

Production

Five Break-Ups and a Romance was first announced during a media conference on April 18, 2023, at B Hotel in Quezon City.[3] According to The Philippine Star on April 23, 2023, the cast and the production of the film have finished their filming, editing and dubbing[4] and reportedly took 13 days for the shooting to wrap up.[5] The film was shot mainly in Singapore and Manila's Bonifacio Global City.[2]

Promotion

Pre-release

A scene drop from the film was released early in September.[6] The official teaser of the film was released on September 16, 2023.[7] It was followed by the release of the two-part in-depth discussion with Montes and Richards titled Five Breakups and a Romance: The Actors.[8]

Reception

Critical response

Writing for The Philippine Star, Jerald Uy gave the film a positive review and commended how it navigated through our shared nostalgia, stating, "The story structure is a smart way to tap into the viewers’ recent memories of love and loss." Uy also praised Richards and Montes' performances in the film and Villamor's script saying: "Her beautiful script seamlessly complements the breathtaking shots of the movie."[9]
