Lawrence D. Eicher Award
Awarded forAcknowledgment of contributions and performance of an ISO technical committee or subcommittee in the development of ISO International Standards.
Presented byISO
First awarded2003

The Lawrence D. Eicher Award is granted to ISO technical committees (TC) and subcommittees (SC) that have demonstrated contributions to the development of international standards. The award further aims to encourage the participation of developing countries in the standardization processes.

Overview

The award is named after ISO’s former Secretary-General, Lawrence D. Eicher. Established in 2003, it commemorates Eicher's contributions during his time at ISO from 1986 to 2002. During his tenure, ISO shifted its focus from primarily technological aspects to include market-oriented considerations. Standards from this period reflect this broader perspective.[1]

Eligibility and Nomination

All ISO and joint ISO/IEC technical committees and subcommittees can be nominated for the award.

Nominations can be proposed by:

  • TC/SC Chairs
  • TC/SC Committee Managers
  • Representatives of ISO member bodies
  • ISO Technical Programme Managers

Selection

Committee

A rotating selection committee from the ISO Technical Management Board oversees the nomination review process and selects the award recipient.

Criteria

Nominees are evaluated based on:

  • Leadership capabilities
  • Committee coordination
  • Adoption of innovative methodologies
  • Project management skills
  • Meeting facilitation effectiveness
  • Engagement of developing countries
  • Responsiveness to new challenges

Award Benefits

The award is presented at the annual ISO General Assembly. Recipients, often represented by roles like the Chair and Committee Manager, receive a certificate from the ISO President. ISO also covers the travel expenses for up to two representatives from the awarded committee. The 2021 award ceremony was conducted virtually due to specific circumstances.

Winning the award also provides:

  • Enhanced visibility in the ISO community
  • The opportunity to share best practices on platforms such as ISO Connect
  • Promotion via ISO communication mediums
  • Financial support for celebratory events organized by the awarded committee.

Recent Winner

In 2023, the award was presented to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42 Artificial Intelligence (AI). This committee, consisting of members from 59 countries, works on the ethical development and use of AI technologies and engages a variety of global stakeholders.[2][3]
