His sister, Rosalie Gerut, is a Jewish cantor, singer, composer and playwright. Gerut’s childhood was spent in Dorchester and Milton, MA, with graduation from Milton High School in 1972. Because his parents were not financially well-to-do, Gerut never received an allowance. He credits this childhood reality to the fact that, throughout his entire life, he has earned every penny he has ever possessed through his own efforts. Not only did he pay his way through college by working two jobs throughout high school, but he was a rare med student who worked part-time throughout medical school, nevertheless earning a Special Distinction in Surgery designation.
