Tech Herfrica is a non-governmental social impact organization that works to promote the digital and financial inclusion of women and girls in rural areas of Africa.[1][2] The organization was established in February 2023 by Imade Bibowei-Osuobeni, a Nigerian public policy advisor and advocate for the inclusive digital economy. Bibowei-Osuobeni is also the founder and chief executive officer of Tech Herfrica.[3][4]

Tech Herfrica’s vision is to enable women and girls in rural and marginalized communities in Africa to prosper in the digital economy.[5] The organization’s mission is to support the development of women-led businesses in these communities, using technology as a tool to bridge the digital divide.[1][3]

History

Tech Herfrica was established in February 2023 by Imade Bibowei-Osuobeni, a Nigerian public policy advisor and advocate for the inclusive digital economy.[6][7] The organization is headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria. Tech Herfrica’s main focus is to provide women and girls in rural African communities with digital tools, information, digital and financial literacy training, and other resources to enhance their livelihoods and opportunities.[8][9][6] It has since expanded its scope to support the agricultural and entrepreneurial activities of these women and girls, helping them to increase their productivity and market access.[6] Tech Herfrica operates in six African countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania.[5][10]

Governance

Tech Herfrica strives to ensure transparency and accountability in all its engagements. Accordingly, it has adopted some principles to foster corporate governance across the organization. Tech Herfrica has a Board of Directors that provides oversight and strategic direction for the organization, and an Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer (ED/CEO) and Senior Management that oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization. The Board of Directors is made up of the Chairman, Non-Executive Directors (NED), Independent Non-Executive Directors (INED), Executive Director/ Chief Executive Officers, and the Company Secretary.[11]

Tech Herfrica values diversity and inclusion, climate resilience, collaborative partnerships, innovation, and stakeholder engagement as its core values.[3][12] The organization is accountable to its donors, partners, government institutions, beneficiaries, employees, and other stakeholders.[3][11]

Activities

Tech Herfrica provides farmers and traders, especially women, in rural Africa with the information, digital tools, digital and financial literacy training, and other resources they need to enhance their farming and business activities to sell more of their products at competitive market prices.[1][2] By doing so, the organization looks to reduce poverty, reduce food waste, contribute to food security, promote social orientation, and promote digital equity. Some of the services and benefits that Tech Herfrica offers to its beneficiaries include:[13][1]

  • Access to an e-commerce platform, HerLocal Market, that connects rural female farmers and traders to local and international buyers.[3][1]
  • Access to internet-enabled mobile devices, health insurance, business finance, supply credit, and long-term savings plans.[14][5]
  • Access to local technology for farmers and traders to increase production.[1][5]
  • Digital financial literacy training in indigenous languages for women and girls in rural communities.[14]
  • Access to essential information on market prices, new markets, weather forecasts, agricultural methods, governmental policies, etc.[14][5]

Tech Herfrica operates in six African countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania.[5] The organization has trained thousands of farmers and traders, impacted communities, distributed mobile devices, disbursed business finance, facilitated millions of Naira in trade, and increased the income of its beneficiaries by 50% on average.[15][5]
