The Coffin of Andy and Leyley is a psychological horror adventure game developed by Nemlei[2] and published by Kit9 Studio for Microsoft Windows.[3] The game originated as a demo released on Itch.io, and was later expanded and released on Steam in an early access state. The current version of the game features two of four planned episodes, the latter two of which are currently in development. The plot follows siblings Andrew and Ashley Graves, who find themselves in a codependent relationship with one another as they commit various crimes while trying to survive a dystopian world.

The Coffin of Andy and Leyley is an adventure game presented from a top-down perspective, in which players, playing as protagonists Andrew and Ashley Graves, explore the environment and solve puzzles to advance the narrative.[5][4] At times the player is asked to make choices which may change the direction of the game's story, and unlock one of multiple endings.[5][4][6]

Plot

Siblings Andrew and Ashley Graves are trapped in their apartment for three months without food following a quarantine order after the local water supply is found to be contaminated, having been abandoned by their parents and left with no means to call for help as they slowly starve. One day, they discover a cultist neighbor attempting to summon a demon. While the cultist succeeds, the demon steals his soul, and Andrew and Ashley decide to butcher and cannibalize his body for food.

The siblings later plan to escape, and Andrew kills one of the two wardens keeping them imprisoned, while Ashley sacrifices the soul of the other to the demon. The demon offers Ashley a "trinket" which will supposedly give her a clairvoyant dream the next time she falls asleep. After fleeing the apartment, Andrew and Ashley go into hiding. They see on the news that their apartment was reported to have burnt down after their escape, and that they are presumed dead in the fire.

The siblings are pursued by a hitman, but Ashley's trinket alerts her to this, and they outwit and kill him, also stealing his car. As they are running out of money, they plot to rob their parents. On the drive to their parents' house, Ashley has another dream involving the demon, which informs her that the trinket requires more sacrifices for further use. Ashley considers sacrificing her parents.

Andrew and Ashley break into their parents' house and commence their robbery. They find falsified death certificates in their names, suggesting to them that their parents intentionally left them to die. They are interrupted when Mrs. Graves arrives home earlier than expected. Andrew lies that they were allowed to leave after the apartment complex caught on fire and was evacuated. Mrs. Graves reluctantly allows the two to stay for the night, and the Graves family has dinner together. The siblings rethink their plan. Ashley argues to Andrew that they should sacrifice and kill their parents, both to recharge the trinket and prevent their parents from potentially incriminating them by revealing that they are still alive. However, they do not come to an agreement.

Andrew has a flashback dream in which he recalls Ashley's past possessive and manipulative behavior towards him in their childhood, which involved her coercing him into killing a girl who expressed romantic feelings for him, and a subsequent blood oath that the two took stipulating that they would never speak of the girl's death. He is abruptly awoken by Ashley, who has grown impatient with his indecision as to what to do with their parents. The argument awakens their parents, who Andrew and Ashley take hostage and sacrifice to the demon. They then butcher their parents' bodies and dispose of the remains, with Ashley cooking some of their meat into a soup which she and Andrew eat together.

After erasing the evidence of their parents' deaths, Ashley and Andrew resolve to acquire new identities and continue their life together, with the nature of their relationship ranging from antagonistic, to friendly, to potentially incestuous, depending on the prior choices of the player.

Development

The Coffin of Andy and Leyley was developed by independent developer Nemlei.[2] Initially released as a demo on itch.io,[7] it later received an early access release on Steam, which contained two of four planned episodes.[8][2]

On November 27, 2023, publisher Kit9 Studio announced that they had acquired the publishing rights for The Coffin of Andy and Leyley, and that they would be managing further development of the title, with Nemlei opting to discontinue their online presence while continuing to provide art and writing for the game.[3][9]

Reception

Writing for Destructoid, Andrea Gonzalez gave The Coffin of Andy and Leyley a positive review, describing it as "a well-written exploration of a toxic sibling dynamic" and praising the overall tone of the narrative.[4]

In an article for Kotaku Australia, columnist Andrea Rodriguez expressed bewilderment at the game's content, juxtaposing the game's cannibalistic and incestuous themes with its "overwhelmingly positive" reception on Steam. Rodriguez noted that over 7,000 Steam users positively reviewed The Coffin of Andy and Leyley, oftentimes leaving idiosyncratic comments that jokingly express endorsement of the game's content.[5]
