Sher Afzal Marwat (Pashto, Urdu: شیر افضل مروت ; born 4 April 1971) is a Pakistani lawyer,currently serving as a legal practitioner at the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Prior to his tenure at the Supreme Court, he served as a Civil Judge, District Judiciary, Khyber Pukhtunkhawa under Peshawar High Court (PHC). He sentenced Ahmed Bhatti to death. Notably, Sher Afzal is an integral member of the core committee of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), a prominent political party in Pakistan. Within the PTI, he is a notable member of the party's legal team, overseeing a range of crucial legal matters

Marwat's serves as the lead counsel for former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan, the leader of PTI, handling a myriad of legal cases involving the party. In addition to his responsibilities concerning Imran Khan, Sher Afzal also represents other notable PTI officials, including Ali Muhammad Khan, Shandana Gulzar, Shehryar Khan Afridi, Fawad Chaudhry and Ali Amin Gandapur.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

Education

He pursued Political Science and Government studies at Government Degree College Lakki Marwat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He later enrolled in the LLB program at the University of Peshawar. He later traveled to the United Kingdom, where he successfully earned an LLM degree from Cardiff University.

Professional career

Sher Afzal initiated his career as a lawyer before assuming the role of Civil Judge at the Peshawar District Courts in 2004. Subsequently, returning to private legal practice, he joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 2018, where he took charge of the party's legal affairs.[11] Recognized for his contributions, he was appointed to the party's core committee.

During the aftermath of the 2023 Pakistani protests, which led to a crackdown on PTI officials and the abduction of several members, Marwat emerged as a prominent leader. He represented Imran Khan while the party leader was in custody.[12][13][14][15]

Political career

He has been appointed by Imran Khan as a Senior Vice President of PTI and also He is a lawyer in all of Imran Khan's cases. Previously, he was affiliated with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) from 2008 until 15 October 2017, when he announced in a jirga that he had quit the party. He justified his decision by saying, "I need not to remain in a party where I get no respect at all and where the leaders have no time to address the problems of people of my area".[16][17]

On 16 April 2018, he joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after being persuaded by Asad Qaiser and Salim Saifullah Khan.[18]

Marwat had planned to contest the 2018 Pakistani general election and the 2018 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial election from NA-36 Lakki Marwat and PK-91 Lakki Marwat-I, respectively, as a candidate of the PTI. However, due to delays in the allotment of tickets, he withdrew himself from consideration for both seats.

However, his withdrawals were too late and his name remained on the ballot papers for both seats, listed as an independent candidate. He received 92 votes in NA-36 Lakki Marwat, losing to Mohammad Anwar Khan, a candidate of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), and 33 votes in PK-91 Lakki Marwat-I, losing to Munawar Khan, a candidate of MMA.[19][20]

Controversy

On September 27, 2023, during a live TV program on Express News hosted by Javed Chaudhry, Sher Afzal Marwat engaged in a verbal altercation with PML(N) senator Afnan Ullah.[21][22][23] The confrontation escalated to a physical altercation, resulting in punches being thrown by Sher Afzal.[24][25][26]

While Sher Afzal openly acknowledged his involvement, there were conflicting accounts from PML(N) politicians and media influencers, who claimed that Sher Afzal had sustained injuries.[27][28] However, an FIR filed by Senator Afnan Ullah confirmed that he was indeed punched by Sher Afzal.[29][30][31] This incident garnered widespread attention and sparked debates in both political and media circles.[32][33][34]
