Dr. Darren Burke, (born 25 April 1967) is a Canadian university professor[1], researcher and entrepreneur. He is currently serving as the CEO of Circut which is an AI developed sports nutrition company.[2][3]

Early life

Darren Burke was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He completed an undergraduate degree in Physical Education and a Masters Degree in Science from Dalhousie University, and did his PhD in Exercise Physiology at the University of Saskatchewan in 2001.

Career

Upon completing his PhD he started a tenure track role as Assistant Professor at St. Francis Xavier University in 2001, and was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in 2004. In 2008, he left academia career to start his first business.[4] He applied his research to create a new line of sports nutrition products encompassing protein powders, energy capsules, and muscle-enhancing creatine supplements tailored for professional athletes. His brand pioneered safe supplements for athletes in drug-tested sports leading to widespread safety certifications in most supplements today.[5]

In 2013 his company, Rivalus was acquired by Nutrivo.[6] In 2017, Dr. Burke started working on a sustainable technology to decrease food waste. This technology also conserved nutrients in fruits and vegetables which would have otherwise been discarded. In 2018, he partnered with former NHL hockey player TJ Galiardi to launch Outcast Foods which is a sustainable technology-based company aimed at upcycling discarded fruits and vegetables bound for landfills.[7][8] They developed a technology, built manufacturing facilities in two Canadian provinces with large scale capacity to convert late-stage or cosmetically rejected produce into nutrient-dense, long-shelf-life powders for use in natural health products. He served as the CEO of Outcast Foods till the end of 2021.

In September 2021 he won disruptor of the year awards at Volta. In the same year he received the EY Entrepreneur of the Year for Atlantic Canada.

Dr. Darren Burke returned to academia in 2023 as a Industry Professor at McMaster University to help the university set up a makerspace and to develop a curriculum for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.[9][10]
