Tommy Pickles and the Great White Thing is the pilot episode for the series Rugrats. It was animated by supervising director Peter Chung (of Aeon Flux). It was written by Ben Herndon, Paul Germain, with music by Mark Mothersbaugh. All of the characters were voiced by the same actors as in the series, besides Tommy's voice, which was done by Tami Holbrook. Also, Grandpa Lou was named Stu Pickles Sr. in the pilot. It was produced by Klasky Csupo.

The type of animation used in the pilot was never used again in the series, except for the opening credits. Chung drew the characters in the strangest positions and allowed the audience a clear and remarkably amazing look from a child's perspective.

The pilot was never aired on Nickelodeon. It was produced from 1989 until 1990, when it was sent to Nickelodeon, and picked up.

It was first seen by the public on Volume 1 of Decade in Diapers.
