Cristo Rey San Diego High School is a Catholic college-preparatory school and work study program sponsored by the Congregation of Jesus and Mary. Opened in 2020, it is a part of the national Cristo Rey Network of 39 high schools[1]. The school's mission is "to educate young people of limited economic means to become men and women of faith, purpose, and service who are prepared for life”[2]. To be admitted, students must meet financial need guidelines[3].

Cristo Rey San Diego occupies the former premises of St. Jude’s Academy[4]. The first graduating class will be in May of 2023. The school enrollment is 182 as of the 2023-2024 school year, offering grades 9-12[5].

Academics

The Cristo Rey curriculum is designed and taught to prepare students for success in college and life[6]. Cristo Rey San Diego High School offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. The Cristo Rey curriculum offers dual enrollment courses at the University of San Diego, 12 Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and the AP Capstone Diploma[7].

Corporate Work Study Program

The signature and differentiating component of Cristo Rey San Diego High School is the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). In the program, students work five days each month at entry-level, professional jobs all four years of high school. Students earn much of their education cost through participation in the work study program. Through this, students receive a private, college preparatory education, while gaining invaluable real-world work experience from leading corporations and nonprofit organizations in the San Diego area[8]. The Cristo Rey Corporate Work Study Program has been praised for allowing students to gain real-world work experience across many different professional fields, and has been shown to have a significant formative impact on students – demystifying the world outside their neighborhoods; developing workplace readiness skills; introducing them to role models and supportive mentors; and building competence, confidence and aspiration for college and career success[9].

Extracurriculars

Cristo Rey San Diego High School offers students the opportunity to participate in clubs and sports. Students may participate in clubs such as Campus Ministry, ASB, Yearbook Club, and Robotics Club. As a member of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), sports include Cross Country, Flag Football, Volleyball, Soccer, Baseball, and Basketball.

Financial aid

Cristo Rey San Diego High School provides an affordable means of education for young people and their families. Average tuition for the 2023-2024 school year was $850[10].
