Appearance
The Place
Albion is part of the [Rivière_Noire_District]. At the 2011 census the town had a population of 5,205. The place is the administrative headquarters of the Village Council Area Albion.
The coast in front of the town is surrounded by reefs (like everywhere in Mauritius). A number of ships docked here. The most famous is the sinking of the Banda in 1615, in which governor Pieter Both died. Therefore, at the beginning of the 20th century, a lighthouse was built on the coast of Albion at Pointe aux Caves. On October 3, 1910, this 46 meter high lighthouse was commissioned by Governor Sir Cavandish Boyle. Despite the lighthouse, there was another shipwreck in 1915, in which the Carnarec sank.
