[edit]801 NAS formed up at RNAS Lossiemouth, March 1955. Squadron Commander Lt. Cdr. Baker, Senior Pilot Lt. Mancais.
The squadron worked up with a two week spell aboard HMS Bulwark, visiting Oslo. In September the squadron had a 10 day spell at RNAF Station at Vaernes, near Trondheim. Back at Lossiemouth until January, 8th 1956, where squadron ground crew entrained for RNB Portsmouth, then embarked HMS Centaur, departing for East of Suez, January 10th 1956. Up to this point the squadron lost 3 pilots killed in air accidents. I think it was sometime during February,1956 that our C.O. Lt. Cdr. Baker was killed when his aircraft blew up on catapult launch. He was greatly missed by all the squadron personnel. A little later, Lt. Cdr. 'Boot' Nethersole took command of the squadron. (Earlier Boot Nethwrsole had Benn part of an aerobatic team led by the famous Eric Brown. The squadron went on to visit (in Centaur) Karachi, Colombo, Singapore (where the squadron spent two weeks of comparative luxury at RAF Seleter. Further visits to Singapore, Hong Kong, before returning to UK via Singapore, Malta and Gib. We just nicely got through the Suez Canal, before the crisis. Centaur returned to Devonport, at which time 801 was disbanded. Apart from the sad loss of our four pilots it was a really good experience.
