Pickle Tennis is a low-impact racket sport that merges elements of Tennis and Pickleball to allow players with medical or mobility issues to play the game.
Pickle Tennis is a slower version of tennis played on a pickleball court. Players use tennis rackets with shorter handles to decrease movement. "Starter" tennis balls are used as they are larger than standard tennis balls. They are also softer, move slower, and are more visible for players with visual impairments.
Pickle Tennis was created in mid-2010 in Sun City, South Carolina by Ron Liikala. The new sport was created by Liikala for players who were unable to play pickleball or tennis. The only news-related record of Pickle Tennis was published by Bluffton Today on January 26, 2016.[1]
The Rules of Pickle Tennis are flexible, depending on player preferences. The core rules of pickle tennis are:
- Pickel Tennis is played on a pickleball court.
- A short-handled tennis racket must be used.
- A "Starter" tennis ball must be used.
- Pickle ball or Tennis scoring systems can be used, depending on the preference of the players.
Pickle Tennis continues to be a niche sport that continues to trend, particularly in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The sport provides a version of pickleball for players who cannot play it.
