Karishal Gabduldanovich Asanov (born March 12, 1933, Erkin (Talgar district), Almaty Region; died March 26, 2015, Almaty) a historian, writer, public figure, and dissident.
Biography
Karishal Gabduldanovich Asanov was born on March 12, 1933, in Erkin, Almaty Region. His father, Gabdolda Asanov, was the first chairman of the district council (1918–1927) in Taldykorgan. He was married to Nurilya Alimzhanova, and they had two children, Bolat Asanov and Kargash Asanova.
In 1957, graduated from the Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University with a degree in history and philology.
Asanov worked as a teacher in secondary school, on television, as a research fellow in the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, and as an associate professor at the Kirov Kazakh State University.
For many years, Asanov was repeatedly prosecuted for his opposition activities.[1][2][3]
Awards
- 1993 - recipient of the Human Rights Watch Hellman-Hammett prize[1], awarded to persecuted writers
- 2015 - Winner of the Kazakhstani Freedom Prize for contribution to the development of democracy and civil society in the Republic of Kazakhstan
