Conception and design

According to former Dead or Alive designer Tomonobu Itagaki, Ayane was created because they wanted to have another ninja character besides Kasumi and Ryu Hayabusa. Itagaki state "The original concept for Kasumi was a Kurukuru Ninja, but we strayed a little from that. Of course I'm satisfied with how well the character turned out, but I feel like Ayane was given the parts that Kasumi couldn't do."[1]

Reception

Raymond Padilla at GameSpy, originally not a fan of Ayane, later changed his mind, and stated "Learning more about her story, her upbringing, and the root of her feud with Kasumi made me change sides. It got to the point where I started using her in Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball and relished every defeat we gave Kasumi. Again, the game's story drew me in and got me attached to the character."[2]

Jim Sterling, writing for GameFront, was critical of Ayane's sex appeal, due to her age. Sterling added "Would it really kill Japanese developers to at least write down someone’s age as “21″ and promise that we’ll say no more about it? Ayane’s still going to look like a creepy, big-breasted infant no matter what fictional age you slap on her. Would it murder the fantasy of the fanbase if the girl was canonically 21, despite still looking like an eleven-year-old hormone pill addict?"[3]

Mikey Fahey of Kotaku was positive of Ayane's reduction of breast physics in Dead or Alive 5, stating that she "[looks] more like a young girl who'd studied martial arts all of her life and less like a young woman who only studied martial arts when she wasn't recovering from cosmetic surgery."[4]

Dendeki Online staff writer expressed Ayane is their favorite character, stating "Nowadays, tsundere and kuudere characters are not uncommon, but at the time, this girl with a slightly harsh but cute face really stole my heart."[5]
