Nun's Island Theatre is a performance venue located on Nun's Island in Galway, Ireland. In the past it has been used for a variety of events including theatre productions, dance performances, concerts, workshops, and other cultural activities.

History

Nun's Island Theatre is situated in a former Presbyterian Church[1]. The original structure dates back to the 19th century.[2] The transition of the building from a convent to a theatre took place as the arts scene in Galway expanded, particularly after the founding of the Galway Arts Festival in 1978.

In the late 20th century, the building was repurposed as a theatre. This change was part of a wider movement in Galway where historical buildings were converted to cultural spaces to support the growing artistic community in the city.[3][4]

Architecture

The theatre retains many of the architectural features from its time as a convent, including high ceilings and large windows. The interior has been modified to suit its current use as a theatre, with seating for around 80 to 100 people, depending on the configuration. The theatre is intimate, allowing for close interaction between performers and the audience.

Usage

Nun's Island Theatre is utilized for various purposes:

  • Theatrical Productions: It hosts a range of performances from local, national, and international theatre companies.
  • Educational Programs: The theatre is used by the university's drama and performing arts students for practice and performance.
  • Workshops and Seminars: Regular workshops on acting, dance, and other performing arts are held at the theatre.
  • Festivals: It serves as a venue for festivals in Galway, including parts of the Galway International Arts Festival and the Galway Theatre Festival.

In 2023, the Historic Structures Fund awarded Galway City Council €100,000 for repairs and conservation to Nuns Island Theatre and The Manse Creative Arts Centre.[5]
