Oriyomi Abdulrahman Hamzat is a broadcast journalist and human rights activist. He is also the chairman of Agidigbo 88.7 FM.[1]

Background and Education

Oriyomi Hamzat's roots can be traced back to Ibadan, Oyo state. He was born to Asimiyu Adekunle Hamzat, a distinguished journalist who worked with the Nigerian Television Authority. Hamzat completed his high school education at Iroko Community Grammar School before gaining admission to the reputable Oyo State School of Sciences, Pade.

Oriyomi Hamzat is a well-educated individual who has explored various academic fields in his quest for tertiary education. He earned a Diploma in Geology from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, before moving on to study Mass Communication at the institution’s Eruwa Campus (now known as Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa). In November 2023, Oriyomi Hamzat successfully earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics and Language Arts from the University of Ibadan.[2] [3]

Career

Oriyomi Hamzat began his foray into journalism as a print journalist at The Guardian (Nigeria) before transitioning to broadcast journalism. Hamzat worked as a broadcaster at the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State [BCOS], Ile Akede, Ibadan, and later went on to work with other reputable broadcast media stations such as the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Amuludun FM, Raypower FM, Petals FM, and 32 FM 94.9. Hamzat's passion for media and communications has propelled him to establish his radio station, Agidigbo 88.7 FM, which serves as a platform for him to continue his work in the media industry.

Throughout his broadcasting career, Oriyomi Hamzat has been dedicated to the cause of marginalized and silenced individuals, offering them a platform to express their grievances.[4][5]

Oriyomi Hamzat is known for shedding light on societal ills and exposing wrongdoing, regardless of its source. His recent intervention in the case of Timothy Adegoke, a student whose death under questionable circumstances sparked outrage, exemplifies his unwavering pursuit of justice.[6] [7] [8] [9]

Oriyomi Hamzat's unwavering pursuit of truth has often led to conflicts with the powerful.[10] [11] In 2017, he was arrested by the Department of State Security on false charges, an attempt to silence his criticism of the maltreatment of civil servants.[12] [13] This incident only strengthened his resolve to fight for a more equitable society.[14]
