His work takes inspiration from pop culture, cartoons, anime, and vinyl toys. When it comes down to Kaw's approach with his characters, they take inspiration from old cartoon characters while still making them his own.

Graffiti is a form of art that has played a big factor in Kaw's artwork. In an interview, Kaws explained how he views graffiti as having a  “grateful dead community quality." This explains the importance of graffiti to his work. Kaws expressed how before the internet was big, the graffiti community had something they all could share, which he felt very fortunate being a part of, especially since he could link it with his design and art. This led to Kaws having graffiti inspired pieces.

Kaws' widely known collabs are with big brands such as Nike, A Bathing Ape (BAPE), Vans, Original Fakes, Dior to Supreme, and many more....

In his collabs, he creates limited-edition merchandise with his famous characters. By bringing his art onto the consumer market, it has created a way for non-traditional art audiences to view other artwork.
