Cooperatives accomplishing research-related work outside (or in partnership with) academia have been active in France since the early 2010s, judging by the digital traces they have left online (see list below).

In 2022, Roger Spear, published an article that concluded with new perspectives on the ways researchers and journals could play an essential role in the development of copperative thinking[1].

Research cooperatives are not all identical, but they tend to bring together people with different professional backgrounds to form an interdisciplinary team around an actionable project founded on evidence-based research. In France, several types of cooperative models seem to be favored for these research-based collectives, for instance Société coopérative d'intérêt collectif or Société coopérative et participative.
