Janisa Ivette Johnson[2] (September 22, 1991 – May 25, 2024) was an American volleyball player.

Early life and education

Johnson was born on September 22, 1991.[3] Long Beach, California is her hometown. She attended Wilson High School and California State University, Long Beach.[4]

Career

Janisa Johnson was a player for Wilson High School's volleyball team. Likewise she also played for California State University, Long Beach. She was a starter for her college's team.[4]

After graduating from CSU in 2013,[5] Johnson would ply her trade in Europe. She would join German side Köpenicker SC in 2015 before playing in Finland, France, Poland and Spain.[3] She also played in Asia, specifically in the Philippines.

In Finland she played for Orividen Ponnitus.[6]

BaliPure

She would play in the Premier Volleyball League in the Philippines from 2018 to 2019 where she played as an import or foreign player.[7] She would debut in the PVL with the BaliPure–NU Water Defenders at the 2018 Reinforced Conference.[8]

Béziers Volley

She played and won a championship for Béziers Angels in France's LNV Ligue A Féminine.[9] She played from September 2018 to May 2019.[6][10]

Petro Gazz

After her brief stint in France, Johnson would return to the PVL in the Philippines and would help the Petro Gazz Angels clinch the tile for that season's Reinforced Conference and was named the Finals MVP.[9] This was her club's first PVL title.[11]

Radomka Radom

After playing in the Philippines, Johnson would return to Europe and signed with Polish club Radomka Radom of the Polish Women's Volleyball League.[8] However, in March 2021, Radomka Radom announced that Johnson is rendered unavailable for the rest of the 2020–21 season. The reason would be reported a few days later as due to a colon cancer diagnosis.[12]

CD Heidelberg

After undergoing cancer treatment, Johnson would briefly return signing a contract with Spanish club CD Heidelberg in August 2022.[12]

Illness and death

In 2021, Johnson would be diagnosed with colon cancer which caused her to go in a hiatus to seek treatment.[12] She underwent chemotherapy.[13] In August 2022, she would reportedly recover enough to play competitive volleyball again.[12]

However she would die on May 25, 2024.[13]

Personal life

Johnson was of Hispanic descent.[10]
