Society and Death...A Death or a Murder? is a non-fiction narrative written by Sonal Priya that depicts the harsh realities faced by individuals hailing from middle-class or brown families. The novel serves as a reminder that instead of succumbing to societal expectations and conforming to its narrow perspectives, individuals should empower their loved ones to pursue their dreams and attain their aspirations. It advocates the notion that, in times of need society will never come to us for support but those whose ambitions people compromises for the sake of society's thinking, will only allies with us. This thought-provoking work exposes the labor of society as one primarily focused on passing judgments, engaging in mockery, indulging in backbiting, and attempting to shape individuals according to their superficial standards. Society's opinions, often devoid of substance, should take a back seat to the paramount importance of nurturing the dreams and visions of our own people. Society's fleeting contentment should not take precedence over the fulfillment of personal aspirations.

Plot summary

Because of the society that what they’ll say and that our family will be affronted and defamed, people compromise the pleasure of their own loving ones. They heed to the words of society instead of trusting their own people. This mostly transpires in brown families as the people here prioritize the perception of society rather than discerning about the contentment of their own people.

The protagonist in the story, ‘Society and Death’ is Riya Singh who belongs to a brown family and breathes in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand in a joint family. She is very gorgeous and gifted personality who was always absorbed in pursuing the course of fashion designing since her juvenile but her family does not allow her to pursue because they are always petrified of getting battered in the society even after knowing that she is a very decent designer and has designed many lovely dresses. And because of this fear that their family will be defamed in the society, they keep a lot of margins on Riya since the beginning. Not only they verboten her from choosing the career of her choice but also, they don’t allow her to attire tops and trousers and outings with friends is sternly prohibited in her house. Even after all these, she compliments her family and overhauls for their contentment. Once she also argued with her friend who said coarsely about her family.

In her first shot in B.Ed., she scored less marks because of which she was accomplishing coed college but her family don’t let her go in that college as it was their perception that both boys and girls there will do composed study, group projects and go in college excursions and because of these, people will say immoral about their daughter and that their family will be affronted and after all they have to animate in this society only. They enquired her to sit for the exam once more and score good marks so that she can get girls college. Because of this she gets dismay initially but she doesn’t give up and in her next shot, she’s the topper of the city and has got proposal from Jamshedpur’s famous college for chasing B.Ed. At the beginning, her family was again contrasting this but after requesting a lot finally, she gets approval from them for winning admission there and that was the most contented day for her life. But this contentment of her did not last for long. Her family get to know about her lover and initially they rebuked her a lot, used unmannerly words for her and censored her name from the college. They were regretting to allow her to take admission in that college. Now, they touch that it was their principal error and they should have attended to the society by not consenting her to go there. Yet, nobody in the society is acknowledged about Riya’s lover but the piercingly her family nags her, everybody in the society get to know about the stuff and they used to say wicked words about her and defame her and her family. Every time when Riya's family come to know that people were exchanging immoral about them, they again reprimand her a lot. Because of all these slowly and gradually she’s growing into depression. Later, they decide that they will get her married. Hearing all this, she conferences to her brother, who had run away from home a few years ago seeing his family influencing with the perceptions of the society and daunting restrictions on him and now he subsists in Jaipur and is a renowned interior designer. He asks her to originate to Jaipur anyhow and also promised that he’ll let her study further. Riya stabs to elope but her family clasps her and forcefully get her married within a month.

After finding out about Riya’s lover, her husband does not treat her accurately and constantly used to deliver that she has tumbledown his and his family’s life by marrying him. Even her in laws do not used to exchange appropriately with her. Gradually, every bound was being intersected and Riya was not able to endure anything anymore. She forwent everything for the pleasure of her family and to maintain their veneration and dignity in the society but nobody ever thought of her contentment. She develops so depressed that in the end she gives up on her life. She inscribes a letter to her family in which she has mentioned all her visions and sacrifices and then hang herself from the fan.

Respect is very vital and it is given to any person by their deeds and not by getting influenced and impending to the words of society and compromising the dreams and pleasures of anybody. People will voice evil because their work is to voice evil to others, judge them and feel jealous in the pleasure of others but why should we compromise our passion and visions because of the society’s perceptions and judgements? The main reason for all these is generation break. Those who modify themselves with time and admit the generation, they never fall into the trap of society but those who are not able to revolve themselves with time, they originate in the words of the society. It is not the fault of these people at all. These people are very naive. They are just terrified that they may not be battered in the society and they overlook that only those people will sustenance them in need, whose contentment they are negotiating for the sake of the society and that veneration comes from good work and not by influencing by the society’s perception.
