Barnaba Bak Chol (born November 18, 1982) is a South Sudanese economist and politician. He is currently serving as the Minister of Finance and Planning in South Sudan, having been appointed[1] to the position in a presidential decree on Thursday evening August 3, 2023, replacing Dr. Dier Tong Ngor.
Background
Barnaba Bak Chol was born in 1982 (officially estimated age) in Warrap State, Bahr El Ghazal region, South Sudan. He is a member of Dinka ethnic group.
Education and Career
Barnaba Bak Chol holds a Bachelor of Science in economics from the University of Juba, an MBA in International Finance from the University of Buckingham in the UK, and a Doctorate in Business Administration with a major in finance from the United States International University in Kenya.[2] He also holds professional certificates from world-class universities such as Columbia University in the USA and the Investment Banking Institute in New York.
He has over ten years of experience in the financial industry and has expertise in finance[3] and banking[3] in both South Sudan and the East African region. In addition to his political role, he is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Juba, where he has been teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in finance, banking, entrepreneurship, and business since 2019.
Academic and Writing
Aside from his political and professional work, Bak is also a passionate scholar and financial economist.[4][2] He has authored numerous academic papers published in both international[5] peer-reviewed journals[3][6] and local media. He has also participated in conferences worldwide on banking, economics, and entrepreneurship.
Appointment as Minister of Finance
Dr. Barnaba Bak Chol was appointed[7] as the Minister of Finance and Planning in South Sudan in a presidential decree on Thursday evening, replacing Dr. Dier Tong Ngor, who had been in the position since August 4, 2023. His appointment came after former Central Bank Governor Moses Makur Deng was also fired. His extensive experience in finance and economics makes him a suitable candidate for this critical position in South Sudan.
