Early Career

After graduating, Shanmugam spent 3 years as a consultant with McKinsey & Company in London. He returned to Singapore in 2016 to work with ride-hailing giant Grab. He subsequently left Grab to work as Executive Director of a conglomerate in Malaysia, including MediCeram Sdn Bhd, one of the world’s leading ceramic formers manufacturers for rubber gloves.

Livspace (2019 to 2024)

In 2019, Shanmugam joined Livspace to launch the company in Singapore. He currently serves as its CEO, Southeast Asia. Livspace is an omnichannel home interior design & renovation platform, which is valued at >USD 1Bn as of 2023.

He described Singapore as a “highly attractive” market for Livspace, being both large and “a representative 21st century global city that serves as a great test bed for [...] technology innovations and launches.”

Shanmugam also spoke of how Livspace’s entrance to the Singapore market opened doors to its talent pool and abundance of data.

Ridout Road Allegations

In late May 2023, false allegations surfaced suggesting that Livspace had secured government contracts from the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) to renovate properties on Ridout Road, due to Shanmugam’s connection to his father.

Both Livspace and the Singapore Land Authority clarified that the company had not been involved in those renovations, and further that Livspace had never done any work for either SLA or any other government body.

Addressing the allegations in Parliament

On July 3, 2023, Member of Parliament Nadia Samdin requested Minister K. Shanmugam to formally address the claims of Livspace being awarded contracts by SLA for works on properties on Ridout Road.

In his response , Minister Shanmugam issued a formal statement that he had been subjected to unwarranted attacks and referred to the allegations as "utterly false" and "defamatory" in nature.

Livspace also issued a media statement addressing the issue -
