He read Philosophy, Politics & Economics at Balliol College, Oxford, graduating with honours in 2013. During his time at Oxford, he served as the captain of the university chess team. He represented Oxford in the Varsity chess matches of 2011, 2012, and 2013.
Chess
Shanmugam was on Singapore's National Chess Squad for a decade, playing semi-professionally. He also represented Singapore in the Chess Olympiad in Istanbul in 2012, and Baku in 2016. The World Chess Federation (FIDE) awarded him the FIDE Master title in 2008, and the International Master title in 2012. He has since retired from competitive chess.
Career
After graduating, Shanmugam spent 3 years as a consultant with McKinsey & Company in London. He returned to Singapore in 2016 to work with ride-hailing giant Grab. He subsequently left Grab to work as Executive Director of a conglomerate in Malaysia, including MediCeram Sdn Bhd, one of the world’s leading ceramic formers manufacturers for rubber gloves.
Livspace (2019 to Present)
In 2019, Shanmugam joined Livspace to launch the company in Singapore. He currently serves as its CEO, Southeast Asia. Livspace is an omnichannel home interior design & renovation platform, which is valued at >USD 1Bn as of 2023.
He described Singapore as a “highly attractive” market for Livspace, being both large and “a representative 21st century global city that serves as a great test bed for technology innovations and launches.”
Shanmugam also spoke of how Livspace’s entrance to the Singapore market opened doors to its talent pool and abundance of data.
Ridout Road Allegations
In late May 2023, false allegations surfaced suggesting that Livspace had secured government contracts from the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) to renovate properties on Ridout Road, due to Shanmugam’s connection to his father.
Both Livspace and the Singapore Land Authority clarified that the company had not been involved in those renovations, and further that Livspace had never done any work for either SLA or any other government body.
Addressing the allegations in Parliament
On July 3, 2023, Member of Parliament Nadia Samdin requested Minister K. Shanmugam to formally address the claims of Livspace being awarded contracts by SLA for works on properties on Ridout Road.
In his response , Minister Shanmugam issued a formal statement that he had been subjected to unwarranted attacks and referred to the allegations as "utterly false" and "defamatory" in nature.
Livspace also issued a media statement addressing the issue -
“We are issuing this statement in response to the various untrue and malicious allegations that have been made, including allegations that the company has obtained contracts from the Singapore Land Authority (SLA), and has done work for SLA on properties on Ridout Road. These allegations are completely false and baseless.
Livspace has not undertaken any project or work whatsoever at any of the properties based on Ridout Road - neither for SLA, nor for homeowners, nor for tenants. Livspace has no contracts with SLA (and Livspace has never been engaged by SLA to do any work).”
