Trivia

  • Santiago was originally planned to be having an affair with a pregnant Britney Spears in the movie, however after the real life break up with her husband, this idea and subsequent footage has been shelved,
  • The film was originally planned to have Santiago Muñez, the main character, playing for Argentina, because the Mexican soccer team was then sponsored by Nike and Argentina was sponsored by the film's principal sponsor, Adidas. During late 2006, the Mexican Football Federation signed a deal to replace Nike as its kit supplier with Adidas. However, the 2006 FIFA World Cup had already passed by then, as would have the scenes that supposedly were shot during the Cup. It is not well known if Muñez will be playing for Argentina or Mexico. It is expected that Goal! 2: Living the Dream, scheduled for release in early 2007, or the Goal! 2 DVD will give a hint about this matter.
  • In the real 2006 FIFA World Cup, Mexico was beaten by Argentina in the round of 16 by a Maxi Rodríguez's goal in extra time, and the Argentines were beaten by host Germany on penalties in the next round, quarterfinals. It is expected that the movie will depict a very different outcome from the real World Cup, in which Mexico or Argentina (depending on which team Muñez ends up representing) becomes World Champions.
  • Muñez is Mexican. One way he could play for Argentina would be getting Argentine nationality by living there some years. Some fans of the original Goal! speculate that if he goes to Argentina, he would play for River Plate, one of the two most important soccer clubs in Argentina, which is sponsored by adidas. Alternatively, Muñez may discover that he is eligible to play for Argentina via his ancestry; under FIFA rules, a player can qualify for a country with one grandparent of the relevant nationality. In the original film, little is explained about his mother, so a possible story development could be that he finds out that she was at least part Argentine.
  • The current captain of the Mexican national team, Rafael Márquez, has a shoe contract with Nike, so he can't appear in the movie. This may be a factor in favor of Muñez playing in Argentina, who have two highly notable players, Lionel Messi and Juan Román Riquelme, with adidas contracts. Ronaldo appears in Goal! 2 despite having a contract with Nike so many fans believe that Rafael Márquez may appear in the movie if Muñez plays with Mexico.
