In a social conversation, an awkward silence might occur when momentarily, everybody doesn't have anything to say. Research indicates that this happens every 7 minutes in every normal conversation.[citation needed]

Many people go to great lengths to avoid awkward silences, or choose comedy as a way to break the silence. This typically takes the form of saying "awkward silence" or performing a hand motion such as the "awkward turtle" or the "awkward cow" etc.
