Compounds of elements
THIS ARTICLE WILL BE MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE WITH A PERIODIC TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS. IF AVAILABLE, HAVE ONE IN FRONT OF YOU.
An element is a molecule made of one type of atom. A compound of elements is a molecule of two different types of elements. A compound must be made in a definite ratio. There are three types of compounds: Ionic, Covalent, and Metallic.
Ionic
Made of one metal and one nonmetal. Forms a crystal with alternating positive and negative ions. STRONG BOND.File:Ionic compounds fig1.jpg
Covalent
Made of two nonmetals, which touch the zigzag line on the periodic chart.Forms a diatomic molecule, which shares electrons. WEAK BOND.
Metallic
Made of two metals, which are on the left of the periodic chart.. Forms a "sea of electrons"- a crystal of positive molecules with electrons flowing freely in between them. STRONG BOND. It can bend without breaking.
