Photo licensing

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia.

The photo you uploaded and added to some articles has been removed from those articles and deleted because it was improperly licensed. Photos on Wikipedia need to be licensed by the copyright holder under a free use license (such as GFDL or Creative Commons); essentially, the person who took the photograph agrees that it may be used by anyone, anywhere, for any purpose. Since there's no evidence that the copyright owner has released those rights (and we would need more than just your word on that) the photograph can only fall under a "fair use" license. And since there are many, many, many free pictures of bicycles already on Wikipedia, it would not qualify as fair use in this case.

On another note, please do not add external links to commercial sites to Wikipedia articles, as you did in the caption. This is a form of spam. If the use of the photo was contingent on the addition of that link, it still isn't allowed; we don't bargain with copyright holders for permissions. Photos are either given freely and completely or not at all.

I hope this clears things up for you, and that it won't discourage you from continuing to learn the ropes here and become a valued member of our editing team. Kafziel Talk 04:01, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
