I'm not related to Solomon Asch, but I was pretty impressed when I learned about his conformity experiments in psychology class. All my life I've been aware of the pressure to conform, and I have rarely liked it. I think "role models for defiance" as described by Stanley Milgram—people who are willing to stick their head out and in doing so inspire other, more timid people—are among the most valuable contributors to justice and social equality there is.
