Prince Frederick is a census-designated place (CDP) in Calvert County, Maryland, United States, not to be confused with the incorporated, and much larger, city of Frederick some 70 miles to the northwest in Frederick County. The population was 1,432 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Calvert CountyTemplate:GR. The population is steadily growing with new housing and shopping centers. The College of Southern Maryland maintains a day campus there, there is a hospital, and commuter buses run to Washington, D.C. The main branch of the Calvert Library is located in Prince Frederick. It is located at Costley Road, named after a long time advocate and trustee of the library, Mr. Russell Costley.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.4 km² (3.3 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,432 people, 583 households, and 303 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 169.6/km² (439.9/mi²). There were 616 housing units at an average density of 73.0/km² (189.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 62.22% White, 33.80% African American, 0.07% Native American, 2.51% Asian, 0.56% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.82% of the population.

There were 583 households out of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 29.2% were married couples living together, 17.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 48.0% were non-families. 43.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 16.8% from 45 to 64, and 26.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 72.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 64.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $22,321, and the median income for a family was $44,625. Males had a median income of $38,393 versus $19,700 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $21,868. About 14.0% of families and 19.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.7% of those under age 18 and 21.5% of those age 65 or over.
