VKP Khalid Haji, [edit] HistoryPeople migrated from northern part of Malabar particularly Kottikulam, Pallikara, Manikoth & Adinjal in South Canara and Tellicherry, Edakkad, Muttom & Payangadi in Northern Kerala. Most of the head of the families came to Padne to merchandise their produces like sweet potatos, tobacco, yellow banana, cultivated on their land and also dried fish collected from various parts of the district. The means of transport they used was “CHEENA” a kind of local water transport to move their stuff through Nileshwar Chanda (Weekly Market). The name of famous tobacconist Kundren Assainar is worth stating here as one of the pioneers of the trade. He was father of Adinjakaran Mohammed who established Valiya Peedika at Padne Old Bazar as early as nineteenth century. Padne is a thickly populated village at the southern tip of Kasaragod District. It is a sandy belt stretching from Oary Mukku(Kannandi Pothi) in the north to Porot(Purgotu) in the south. It is adorned by Ear Puza in the east and Padne Puzha in the west with lush green paddy fields and coconut farms on either side. Padne is a trouble free village having a theme look even at the behest of scorching summer. Perennial supply of natural water at all seasons is a specialty of Padne village. Main source of income is from cultivation and fishing. However, the village is also strongly supported by non-resident community of Padne living in Mumbai and abroad. Even though Muslims are in majority the minorities are well respected and move hand in hand. It is so befitting of the generation old saying after Pallies (Masjid) Palliyara (Temple), a perfect example of unity in diversity. The traders gradually joined the earlier settlers from Udinoor Village who were mainly Brahmins & Ezhavars. Azheekal developed as a trade & water transport hub of Padne linking Udma in the North & Kottikadav a famous ferry in Payyanur. The lengthy row of CHEENA (KettuVallam) moored around MANJA looked like a harbor, an eye catching scene on those days. The name EDACHAKAI is derived from EDA-CHAL-KAL-AZHI mouth of Earpuzha the so called KIZHAKKE CHAWL a narrow strait opening from the Azhikal dam site and extending to Madikunnu in Cheruvathur in olden days. This Kizhakke Chawl divides Udinoor & Pilikode villages from proper Padne Mahallu. The subject puzha is also known as BALAN PUZHA AND PANAKKAPUZHA. Also the Bridge EDACHAKAI PALAM which links Udinoor with Padne minimizes traveling distance to a great extent. it will be helpless without the contribution toaward the developement in padne from trust, societies and clubs like culture center, gym, bus stand, libraary, social work like street light, accessories for digging grave, financial help in education and charity work for needy people etc.
