London Leah Tipton is a fictional character in the comedy television show The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. She is portrayed by actress Brenda Song. The character is similar to Paris Hilton because of both their first names are famous European capital cities and their last names are names of the hotel to which their families own. Their actions are seemingly similar as well.

Background

London Tipton is the rich, air-headed, spoiled, vain and sometimes selfish teenage daughter of Wilfred Tipton. London loves fashion and style. London's parents are divorced (her father has had many wives) and she lives in the Boston branch of the Tipton Hotel chain, which she will inherit from her father. London, being very wealthy, often goes overseas, wears expensive clothing (even her diapers were designer as said in That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana), and shops a lot to mask ill feelings she harbors over her family life. Though she often treats them badly, she is friends with other show characters, such as twins Zack and Cody, as well as her best friend and the hotel's candy counter girl, Maddie Fitzpatrick.

Despite being pampered, London misses some things that middle-class teenagers have—a fact which was revealed during Poor Little Rich Girl. Among the things she misses are having her parents by her side and not being able to do things normal teenagers do, such as sleepovers. She confessed to Maddie when she was at Maddie's apartment that it was her first sleepover.

Her father has been largely absent from her life, and Mr. Moseby, the Tipton Hotel manager, acts as a surrogate. She took her first steps, in designer booties, with him. He also taught her how to ride a bike and much later how to drive a car. Mr. Moseby also taught London the alphabet, which he said took 14 years. However, to counter her lack of intelligence, London is far stronger than her frame might reveal, supposedly due to carrying around heavy shopping bags all the time when there are no servants around to help her.

London is portrayed as very attractive and glamorous, even as a small child, and won the Mini Miss beauty pageant in 1999. Even though she is somewhat of a celebrity, she has an obsessive problem with other celebrities as seen and heard in Rock Star in the House. She also wears only famous-name designer clothes only, her favorite being the fictional Arturo Vittali. She also claims that even her diapers were made by famous designers and will not knowingly wear designs by unknowns such as That's So Raven's Raven Baxter. She changes her mind when she sees that Hannah Montana likes the outfit. Also, her hair style is frequently changed into short and long lengths often with highlights. She even invented her own hair style, called the "fohawk",mentioned in Boston Tea Party.

[[London has also been shown to have a talent for volleyball, but is only good at it when she is angry. The first time this is shown is when a girl on the opposing team insults her. It is shown again when Maddie kisses her boyfriend, thus making her furious. She is also good at martial arts and chess (even defeating Maddie).]]

London is slow due to a lack of education. Before being transferred to Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow, She attended a very expensive private school. Her father transferred her because he went to the school's Open House for parents and they 'had never heard of her', making Mr. Tipton realize his daughter needed a stricter environment.

London is believed to be Roman Catholic, seeing as she attends Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow, a Catholic school. It is mentioned in the episode Cookin' With Romeo and Juliet that she celebrates Hanukkah as well, and when Maddie reminds London that she is not Jewish, London retorts that she "would never skip eight days of presents".

Family

London's parents are divorced and her father has been seen in only two episodes (from neck down, and behind security guards), while her biological mother has never been shown. Wilfred Tipton is probably American or Canadian because of his dialogue and accent and her mother is most likely of Asian Descent (because of London's Asian Descent). Her parents could also both be Asian-American. London's father has four ex-wives and many girlfriends. Out of Mr. Tipton's relationships, only London's current stepmother, Brandi Tipton, has actually been seen (only once), though London has a bracelet with solid gold charms representing all of her stepmothers. London has no biological siblings. She has a half-sister named Yolanda. (Yolanda is the daughter from one of Mr. Tipton's relationships.) London has two dogs, pomeranians, named Ivana and Prince Percival Persimmon du Lac (one of Ivana's sons). She also mentioned having a cat named Cat, in Club Twin.

Strength

It is shown in many episodes that London is very strong and athletic like her portrayer Brenda Song. She trains Maddie for P.E, plays volleyball, and beat up a thug who attempted to steal her purse in the street. She is also shown to practice yoga. She is an accomplished martial artist. She is also an excellent volleyball player — when angry and focused.

In the episode Smart & Smarterer London proved to be very good at playing chess, even though she has low intelligence. Before their first game London didn't even know what chess was. Maddie taught her how to move the pieces during the first game and was then defeated by London numerous times after, infuriating Maddie. After being challenged numerous times, London decided to lose on purpose so Maddie would quit.

Relationships

London has dated numerous boys during the show:

  • In the episode Maddie Checks In, she and Maddie double date with two boys named Jason and Kyle.
  • In Scary Movie she pretends to be poor to attract a boy named Brandon (Tahj Mowry).
  • When she masquerades as a merit scholar for a boy named Trevor, played by Zac Efron, in Odd Couples, she ends up losing him to Maddie (although, she didn't seem to mind).
  • In Volley Dad she dates Joe, a boy from her school, though once again this relationship was brief. (London has never had a stable romantic partner.)
  • In the episode Cookin' With Romeo and Juliet, London falls for the heir of the St. Mark Hotel across the street from the Tipton. His name is Todd, and at first she only likes him for his looks and money, but later realizes that she is in fact in love with everything about him. The managers of both the Tipton and the St. Mark will not allow London and Todd's relationship to develop due to the fact that the two hotels are rivals and their fathers hate each other. When Todd is accepted to a dentist's school in another country, London tells him to go, ending their relationship. This has been the only case of "true love" that London has experienced.
  • In Sink or Swim London develops romantic feelings with Lance the Lifeguard after he teaches her how to swim. This is the first time where London's relationship doesn't end after one episode. Lance and London become a couple at the end.

Friendships

Shared with Maddie

There has also been cases in which she and Maddie like the same boy:

  • In Twins at the Tipton, she and Maddie both like Kirk but Maddie agrees to go out with his smarter twin brother. To Maddie's dismay the smarter twin is also the "doofus" twin.
  • In Ah! Wilderness! London gets very upset when Maddie dates her ex-boyfriend.
  • In Rock Star in the House London and Maddie become obsessed with Jesse McCartney. However while Maddie wants to interview him for her school paper, London wants to marry him.
  • In Odd Couples London likes Trevor who ends up kissing Maddie, even though they say they hate each other.

Trivia

  • Even though she is said to be dumb, she sometimes uses words that you would never think she knew like in the episode Pilot Your Own Life, she used the word embodiment, and a middle school word.
  • London is said to have a bad school record at he previous school, and is a failing student, yet she still is in the same grade as Maddie Fitzpatrick.
  • Her dog, Ivana is never heard of in their third season and after the mid-second season until the newest episode, Sleepover Suite.
  • She is said to be a simple thinker naming her cat Cat, yet she can think of names like Ivana and even as fancy as Prince Percival Percimmon DuLac.
  • London's name is possibly meant to be a pun on the real life hotel heiress, Paris Hilton. The last name being a hotel name (Tipton), and the first name being a city in Europe (London).
  • London's closet is seen numerous times, being seen to be both on 4 floors, and being so large that Maddie gets lost and London hands out a map. It also contains mirrors that tend to adore London and insults Maddie when she tries on outfits.
